Snow Day

Growing up on the East Coast, I expected snow as soon as we flipped the calendar to December. There were a handful of occasions that the snow didn’t arrive until after Christmas but for the most part, snow was a big part of my life.
Now that I live out here on the West Coast, winter is a bit different. I’d be lying if I said that the holidays were the same for me – there’s just something not right about Christmas lights on cactus and palm trees. Between the lack of snow and my family being roughly 3500 miles away (more on dealing with that later), I really have to go out of my way to feel the holiday spirit.

Every year, Husband and I make a point to go up north to Flagstaff; a sleepy college town about two hours north of Phoenix. They were hit with a nice winter storm earlier this month so I was thrilled to pack up the car and head up the I-17 for the day.

You can imagine how pleasantly surprised I was to see Lane Bryant’s collection of winter wear this year. I pulled these warming LIVI leggings and matching top – which would be great underneath ski gear – and definitely kept me warm (disclosure: it was about 32 degrees this day). I fell in love with the packable puffer jacket in Deep Ocean (I love, love, love, that shade of blue) and these snow boots kept my feet warm and dry while we played in the snow.

The memories flooded back as we drove through the snowy roads: making snowmen with my brother and sister, decorating our tree, sipping hot cocoa and arguing over marshmallow distribution. I couldn’t resist running around in the snow, pretending I was a kid again. We spent the rest of the day driving around, taking in the gentle snowflakes as they fell and ended the night at our favorite High Country eatery, Fat Olives.
