In this last post for Vanity Fair’s “Women Who Do” campaign, I get the incredible honor of introducing you to the three women in my life who inspire me, every day. I’ve always been a girl’s girl – someone who has had strong female friendships that have lasted years and years.
The friendships I have with these women are the glue that holds me together. We may not see each other all the time, but the comfort in knowing that they are a phone call away is priceless. Whether it’s to celebrate a success in my life or grieve the loss of a loved one, these women have seen me through it all.
I’ll never forget how I met Megan. We were in a dance class together – a pole dance class – and we were paired up for choreography. We became fast friends when we bumped into each other inappropriately. That night, in the studio, we laughed until we cried. To this day, she remains the person that I can laugh with until my stomach hurts, but also the person I can count on to challenge me in my life.
As a pediatric nurse, Megan doesn’t take any crap – and has always told me like it is. But her compassion for her patients and patience with them always reminds me that beneath her tough exterior is someone soft, caring and empathetic. Someone who constantly puts others before herself. She is kind and warm and honest, and I can’t imagine my life without her.
In 2009, I published my first novel – and Christine was one of my editors. From the get-go, Christine struck me as unique. She’s a mom of two boys and these days, has a fancy corporate job in marketing. Her love for murder-mystery novels runs so deep, it’s kind of scary (at one point I was convinced that she could kill a guy and they would never find his body). She’s also (on a good day) about 5’3, and both of her boys (and the clients she deals with on the daily) tower over her. But she never backs down.
Last year, when my family experienced tremendous loss, Christine immediately made plans to attend the services with Nick (my husband) and I. There was no question, no hesitation. In our darkest hours, Christine was there for us. I know that I can pick up the phone and despite her insanely busy schedule, juggling her family and work, she will answer the call and drop everything to be there for me.
Nicole is newest in my life, but to say that we crashed into best-friend-love would be the understatement of the century. A former mutual friend introduced us, and when we both chose to end our toxic relationships with this former friend, we were left with each other to move through the emotional fallout. What we found, in the bottom of a painful situation, was a bond that was rock solid – founded on honesty and openness. It’s since turned into one of the strongest bonds I’ve ever had in my life.
Nicole is young – younger than me, and I love that not only does she a) keep me current; she also b) looks at life with a fresh perspective. She is gracious and generally an optimist, who sees the good in all people. The love and excitement she has for life and everything is offers is nothing short of inspiring, and her strength in the face of adversity is admirable. Being a fellow blogger, we can connect on so many levels – but when we get to work together… that’s when the magic happens.
I find a way to be thankful she is in my life every day.
The popular saying is that “behind every great man, is a great woman.” But I’d challenge that behind every great woman is a group of every greater women. I’m so glad that I got to introduce you to just a few of the incredible women in my life. And of course, a huge huge thank you to Vanity Fair for supporting Sometimes Glam and allowing me to share these stories with you.
If you’ve read my past Vanity Fair posts (here and here) you’ll know that they are a company that supports women above everything. It’s so rare to have a company so filled with positivity and one that genuinely cares about their clients.
Which is why, before I end today’s post, I want to share their BOGOGO initiative with you. For every bra you purchase on their website, not only are you getting one FREE (omg!) they are also donating one to Dress For Success. If you’re not familiar with Dress for Success, here’s their mission statement:
“The mission of Dress for Success is to empower women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and the development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.”
Not only are Vanity Fair bras super comfortable (this one is my fave) they are affordable! Shop online right now to snag a couple for yourself – and most importantly, to help out a sister in need. Your purchase is more than just a bra for you – you’re helping a woman get her life back.
